TN Suffers Heavy Job Losses

Though I’ve never been there, I would have thought that Memphis was a pretty thriving city, what with its tourist attractions (hello, Graceland!) and amazing food (hello, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives!), or so I’ve heard. But it turns out that the city has been hit pretty hard with devastating job loss numbers.

Within the past ten years, the state of Tennessee has lost 99,000 jobs, all of them in the private sector. This averages out to about 4 percent of the entire state’s private sector workforce. This rate helped make the state of Tennessee number 43 out of all 50 states in employment.

Memphis Jobs May Be on Hold with Gas Price Increase

Nothing could be worse for the fragile Memphis job market. If gas prices continue to rise, it could indicate a very strong problem within the job market. The industry is unlikely to see improvements in jobs when the cost of fuel continues to rise. Though the economy will grow at a slower pace than what many would like it to, there will be improvements and that means new jobs will come in. While the area still has an unemployment rate of 8.8 percent, hitting the 34th highest position in the country, there are companies hiring locally. For example, you may want to check out Lowes. The company has announced it will be hiring as many as 800 seasonal workers in the spring months throughout its stores in the Memphis metro area. Those positions are available as soon as now and could lead to as many as 25 hours per week, though some could be full time positions.

Memphis Job Market and Tech Surge

In the Memphis job market, an increase in the number of tech positions in the area may be helping to get people back to work. The Nashville Technology Council recently released its fourth quarter report for 2011. The report, called the Technology Hiring Trends Report, focused on the middle portion of the city. Technology has become an important part of the local economy in the area. Middle Tennesee Strongest Growth in State The report indicates that 1044 jobs were available in the region that were related in some way to the technology industry. That is up 12 percent from the third quarter of 2011. The largest draw for the job increases came from the health care industry. That includes businesses such as United Health Group, Community Health Systems and Vanderbilt University. Annually, the middle portion of the state saw the most demand for these higher paying tech jobs in 2011 overall. However, in the state as a whole, there was a decrease in the number of open positions during the fourth quarter. That indicates that the middle portion of the state is the strongest area for job growth in this industry.
